Self-Adhesive and Pressure-Sensitive Foam Board: Usage and Application

When it comes to the wide array of materials used for framing, making exhibits, signs, mounting pictures etc. foam boards strike makers as the most preferred substrate that is needed for domestic, commercial and art and craft related projects. So what exactly it is about foamboard that makes it such a highly preferred material?
Foamboard for picture mounting

Foam board is one of the strongest materials that is also lightweight yet strong at the same time and that won't dent or bend easily. It is also easily cut and drawn into various shapes as desired, which makes it a common choice for mounting of photographs and prints, as well as a backing material for picture framing. They come in a wide variety to serve a multitude of purposes. One particular category that we are going to discuss today is the self-adhesive or pressure-sensitive kind of foam board.

Pressure-Sensitive or Self-Adhesive Foam Board
A self-adhesive foamboard is indeed useful for making signs which are of a temporary nature or for mounting posters that are not original works of art or archival. That is to say, the foam board and adhesive on these boards are not meant to be used for archival purposes. They are made in a manner that serves quick-fix requirements. Therefore, for more permanent applications, such as outdoor signs and for archival processes, various other techniques and approaches to mounting artwork or photos are used. These include acid-free dry-mount tissue onto acid-free foam board and for the most dent resistant mounting, gator board is used.
Self-Adhesive Foam Board

Self-adhesive foam board is the perfect choice when cold mounting photos and artwork on to foam board. This foam board features acid-free adhesive and is a chemically inert material. Typically supplied as one or two-sided pressure sensitive foam board, the substrate is easily available in retail or online stores. One reason the self-adhesive type is purchased often is that it is quite quick and easy to use and doesn’t require any exterior application and drying time typically involved with the usage of glue or adhesive. All you need to do is simply peel and then stick it to the surface. That’s also why it is considered ideal for mounting posters and photographs. It is also perfect for signage as it doesn’t involve any messy spray glues to deal with. It also cuts across with convenience just like any regular foamboard. It comes in a wide range of sizes and thicknesses ranging from 1/8 to 3/16 inches.

Repositionable Self-Adhesive Foam Board

Another small category in self-adhesive foam boards is the repositionable self-adhesive foamboard, which is the perfect choice of users when it comes to cold mounting photos and artwork on to foam board.
